The song is ‘I’m a man’ by Spencer Davis group

Its a wicked tune and nice idea as well
Saw this ad last night and fell in love with it! I even remembered the product it was selling the following morning! Can’t say that happens very often nowadays!!
Saw this ad earlier this evening and just had to text my daughter to tell her to watch out for it! Brilliant – especially as I remember the tune from first time round!!
While the music is pleasing and the advert creative in its approach has anyone given a thought to the fact that the dog looks genuinely terrified.
I understand trainers can do remarkable things but wonder if this level of realism is possible to initiate on command. Until I learn how this advert was produced I think I’ll hold of singing its praises.
I love the song and the ad!
That doggie is the sweetest thing…
however i have seen but bad reviews…some people cant get it!
bless…
I find your advert very disturbing. I don’t like the way the dog looks frightened and is shaking. I know these little dogs do that but how did you get it to do that on cue?
Just love the advert and the CGI really works without being cringeworthy. Gets in your head and stays there, well done VW, very clever & thanks for the video link on your site, excellent, now I can overdose on the ad……..
Just to respond to a couple of posts, I’d be pretty sure a massive corp. like VW would never allow any mistreatment of animals, I mean LA is full of ‘Movie star’ dogs who are extremely well trained, a quick Google search shows a glimpse of what you can get these days

I love this ad too but I hadn’t thought whether the animal was mistreated. I would like to think it wasn’t. Some animals, especially small dogs, are very nervous anyway when outside their usual environment and it doesn’t look like the dog was having to do anything stressful except stand there. However, I do seriously hope it wasn’t put under any duress.
Just to respond to Ms Moffat’s post…
I’m pretty sure that it’s not ‘his’ advert per-se. In addition, the dog is singing. On Cue.
i love the song in this advert after listening to the spencer davis group wanted to see if there was a verion closer to Ad, find one by Steve Winwood.

this is how the video is supposed to be percieved
DDB London has created a story of a small and nervous dog who feels so confident when he rides in the VW Polo that he sings his little heart out. Says Dylan Harrison: “The idea came from that feeling you get when you’re in the shower. You’re relaxed, you don’t have a care in the world and, regardless of your ability, you can feel free to belt out any song that comes to mind. This is how it feels to drive around in the safety of the Polo.” Adds Feargal Ballance: “After the idea, the next challenge was finding the right track. When we eventually stumbled across ‘I’m a man’ by the Spencer Davis Group which we liked it instantly. Firstly it’s a bloke’s song – it’s manly, proud and coming from the mouth of a dog could be very funny. Next we needed someone to sing our song. We found a wonderful singer in Charlie Winston who has a fantastic voice, characterful and actually sounded like it was coming from our dog.
“The talented Mr. Noam Murro brought the entire thing to life. And even though we were working with animals Biscuit made it feel like the easiest shoot in the world. It was shot in San Pedro, Los Angeles over a relaxing 3 days.”

does anyone know what ad agency made the advert?
cheers
Just to let the people concerned about the dog it hasn’t been mistreated its a medical condition that some animals get ( a bit like Parkinsons ) that causes them to shake and doesn’t mean they are scared or nervous, my dog has it and he’s treated better than most humans and has never been abused in his life.
Thanks
my Jack Russell shakes just like the pup in this advert – and he just loves to ride in the car [any car in fact] – he often has a big smiley face but can look quite nervous in strange surroundings. he is an extremely well looked after family pet.

I find the ad disturbing, even if it is just acting it shows an innocent dog in apparent distress.
Hi
I’d also like to download a copy of this video – my husband loves it so much. Can anyone give me a link to site that I can download it from?
Thanks!

Anyone with a keen eye will be able to spot the difference between live action and CGI, and I believe the mannerisms of the shaking dog were not produced by CGI, but in fact it is actual footage of a rather terrified looking creature. The tail between the legs, the trembling, the downward droop of the head, all indicators of a frightened dog. I can be sure that trainers can produce all kinds of emotional responses in dogs through training, but you can’t just say “Dog, look frightened” without at first giving it a stimulus to produce that, even if it is associated with something later, like a command or a sound. Whether a Pavlovian response or not, I do feel uncomfortable at the fact the dog looks like it has been made to adopt a frightened, submissive stance. I have heard this has since been taken off air, and I guess (I don’t know how much is known) that this may be because the methods used were proven to be unkind to the dog. I may be wrong, but I’m just positing my opinion here.
have u people got nothing better to do than to moan about this ad? they wouldnt show it if the dog was mistreated.
hey no this dog wasnt mistreated it was stood on a vibrating plate! gt eny idea where 2 download this vid 4rm i want it on my phone cheers x
I absolutely adored the dog singing in the car and though fairly certain the dog wasn’t harmed or indeed terrified (as he appears to be), I still found the “indoor” element of this advert very disturbing as a dog person and a dog lover. In a sense it didn’t matter to me that this particular dog may have been acting, there are hundreds of thousands of dogs, and indeed other animals, who are mistreated on a regular basis and I associated the advert, and VW Polo, with such mistreament after a while. I wish VW had decided to remove the “indoor” part of the advert and simply extend the joyous “singing” part!
The music for this advert is by Charlie Winston

not quite sure where rthe other guy got his answer from….
This dog is a Jack Russell Terrier. I have one & that is exactly what they do! This little dog was NOT harmed in any way! My dog does the exact same thing even when he’s happy! This is common in these types of dogs. So, all you “”animal activists” need to stop whining & find some REAL animal cruelty to complain about! I think the commercial is brillant!
Great work BISCUIT!
